PROJECT SUMMARY

There is a growing demand for fitness apps among women who want to stay fit and healthy. However, many of the existing fitness apps are generic, expensive and do not cater specifically to the needs of women. Moreover, women who are interested in fitness often use sports supplements to enhance their performance, but they are often unsure about which supplements to use and how to use them. Therefore, there is a need for a fitness app that is tailored to the needs of women and also provides third-party suggestions for sports supplements.

The goal is to create a fitness app that will provide women with a user-friendly interface that is easy to navigate. The app should offer a free limited version that will give users a taste of what the app has to offer. Additionally, the app should integrate with third-party sports supplement providers, allowing users to make informed decisions about which supplements to use and how to use them safely and effectively. By providing these features, the app will help women achieve their fitness goals and lead a healthier lifestyle.

USERS & AUDIENCE

The primary target audience for FitLab is women who are interested in improving their fitness and overall well-being. This includes women of different fitness levels, from beginners looking to start their fitness journey to intermediate and advanced users seeking to challenge themselves further. FitLab caters to women of various age groups and fitness goals, offering personalized features and content to accommodate different needs, whether it's weight loss, strength training, flexibility, or general health and wellness.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Me and my teammate shared the role of lead UX/UI designers for this project.

My responsibilities included conducting user research to understand their needs, preferences, and pain points. We then created the user persona together and developed user flows that outlined the steps for using the app's features like the free limited version, meal prep with nutrition information, and sports supplement suggestions. I designed visual designs that are visually appealing and aligned with the app's branding.

Collaborating with another UX/UI designer was an enjoyable learning experience that enhanced my teamwork skills and ability to compromise and reach agreements on various aspects of the project. It provided valuable opportunities for skill development and reinforced the importance of effective collaboration in delivering a successful app design.

MARKET RESEARCH

To evaluate the viability of FitLab, an analysis of the overall landscape of fitness apps targeting women was done, including their features, user ratings, and popularity. This research provided insights into the existing competitors and their strengths and weaknesses. We also examined user reviews and ratings of existing fitness apps, paying particular attention to reviews from women users. This helped identify popular apps and the specific aspects that users appreciate or find lacking, providing valuable insights for improving FitLab. Lastly, we researched the market for sports supplements, with a focus on products targeting women's fitness and wellness. This analysis helped us identify brands or platforms that offer supplement recommendations, giving an understanding of potential competitors in this space.

By conducting thorough market research in these areas, a comprehensive understanding of existing competitors within the women's fitness app and sports supplement space was obtained, enabling better positioning and differentiation for FitLab.

INTERVIEWS & SURVEYS

We conducted in-depth interviews with 4 women who are active users of fitness apps, aiming to understand their preferences, pain points, and areas for improvement. We explored their likes, dislikes, and gathered valuable feedback to inform the development of FitLab. Additionally, to gain a broader perspective, we distributed a comprehensive 10-question survey to 24 respondents, which included both fitness app users and individuals who were not currently using such apps. This approach allowed us to gather diverse insights and understand the expectations and desires of potential FitLab users. The responses varied, providing us with a comprehensive understanding of the features, functionalities, and overall experience that FitLab should offer to cater to the needs and preferences of its target audience effectively.

AFFINITY DIAGRAM: FITLAB FEATURES AND USER EXPERIENCE

The affinity diagram allowed us to visualize and organize various aspects related to FitLab's features and user experience. It helped us identify common themes and patterns, providing insights that guided us in the development and eventual improvement of the app.

USER PERSONA

Our user persona is Amy Johnson, a professional working in a corporate setting. By understanding user personas like Amy, FitLab can tailor its features and offerings to address the specific needs and motivations of its target audience, enabling users to overcome challenges, stay motivated, and achieve their fitness goals effectively.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

The lack of personalized guidance, accountability, and reliable nutrition information in existing fitness apps hinders users from consistently achieving their fitness goals and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

PROPOSED SOLUTION

FitLab offers personalized guidance, accountability features, and a comprehensive nutrition guide, empowering users to achieve their fitness goals and lead a healthy lifestyle with confidence and consistency.

LO-FI WIREFRAMES

The wireframe sketches served as a crucial visual aid in conceptualizing the app's design. The primary focus was on the user-friendly home page, enabling users to select their preferred exercise areas and access instructional videos for correct techniques. The nutrition section was given special attention, offering users a wide range of personalized healthy meals and recipes and supplement recommendations. Moreover, we diligently designed the progress page, profile, and favorites sections to ensure a seamless and enjoyable user experience.

MID-FI WIREFRAMES

Afterward, we transitioned to developing mid-fi wireframes on Figma. In addition to refining the existing screens, we incorporated new elements like an initial questionnaire to better understand the user's fitness level and specific requirements. This strategic approach allowed us to enhance the app's usability and cater to users' unique needs effectively.

PROTOTYPE

A high-fidelity prototype was meticulously crafted to vividly showcase our envisioned app. The prototype was thoughtfully designed to provide users with an immersive and realistic simulation of their future experience within the app. By leveraging high-fidelity visuals, interactions, and seamless navigation, we aimed to deliver an engaging and captivating user journey.

To enhance personalization, a user-friendly initial questionnaire was intorduced. This questionnaire plays a pivotal role in tailoring exercise routines, meal suggestions, and sports supplements, ensuring that each user receives the most relevant and effective recommendations for their unique fitness journey.

The FitLab app provides a hassle-free user experience, eliminating the need for sign-ups to access its features. Users can seamlessly utilize a limited free version of the app, granting them access to guided exercises. Additionally, users have the convenience to jot down personal notes on exercises, enabling them to tailor their journey to their specific preferences and needs.

We dedicated special care and meticulous attention to detail while crafting the nutrition and supplement sections. Our goal was to curate an experience that seamlessly blends appeal with utility. By combining visually attractive elements with practical functionality, we aimed to provide users with an enjoyable and valuable journey throughout these sections of the app.

A convenient "Favorites" feature was introduced, ensuring users can effortlessly access their most cherished exercises, meals, and supplements discovered throughout the app. This personalized list enables users to quickly revisit and engage with their preferred content, enhancing their overall user experience and keeping them motivated on their fitness journey.

CONCLUSION

Upon completing the prototype for the envisioned app and conducting tests on UseBerry, it became evident that labeled buttons significantly boost users' confidence and simplify navigation. Users appreciated an app design that avoids complexity, leading to a positive user experience. The overall concept of the app proved successful and promising.

As my first UX/UI case study, this project allowed me to apply fundamental knowledge effectively, infusing meaning and purpose into my work. The experience has been invaluable, enhancing my skills and reinforcing my passion for the field. I am excited to continue growing and contributing to the world of UX/UI design.
